FAQ’s for Intense Pulsed LIght (IPL) Photorejuvenation

Standard

How does IPL work?

A specialized wand filters light through a crystal which targets blood vessels, acne and hyper- pigmentation.  Each crystal produces a different wavelength that is ideal for a specific treatment.  The skin absorbs the light and depending on the crystal used, determines the depth it will penetrate into the skin.  For example, vein is treated using 560 nm (measured in nanometers) and the acne treatment uses a 420 nm crystal.

How is IPL different from Laser?

They are very similar but IPL has a much larger treatment window than most lasers.  The spreading of light over a larger area results in quicker treatments.

What body areas can be treated?

Most areas, except close to the eyes.

What does it feel like?

The wand with the crystal is placed on your skin and a beam of light is pulsed onto the skin.  There is typically a “heated snap” like a rubber band snapping the skin with each pulse of light.  The intensity depends on the actual setting of the machine and the clients tolerance.  I prefer not to use numbing agents on clients and ask that they be the one to determine the intensity of the machine.  Therefore, the treatment is tolerable and they see results.

What should I expect after treatment?

Immediately following treatment the skin will be slightly pink and have the sensation of a sunburn. Within hours, the redness and warm sensation resolves.  Hyper pigmented skin may appear darker and then be naturally shed within two weeks.  Veins may disappear after treatment or appear darker and then gradually fade over two weeks time.  Rosacea skin will typically benefit from less pronounced redness with a week after treatment.
